I won’t lie… I shed a tear tonight when I heard the news about Steve Jobs’ passing.
The first time I saw a Macintosh computer was the year 1989, in my sophomore year in college when I got an internship job at one of the few authorized Apple dealerships in town (and elsewhere). I still remember a friend of mine showing me this cube-shaped computer, like nothing I had seen before, and I thought it was magical. It took me 15 years to go back to the Apple brand and I have settled with it ever since. Identika runs 100% on the Apple platform.
Steve Jobs was a visionary in many fields (computers, software, electronic distribution and delivery, music, movies, retail, etc.). He was also relentlessly focused on excellence and innovation (with his name on 317 Apple patents). He’s become a great source of inspiration for millions of people around the world, including us.
Mr. Jobs’ accomplishments represent the limitless potential of the human spirit to achieve great things and to change the world. In that regard, we all can feel proud of how Steve and his legion of Apple employees have changed our lives for the better. Not only does he leaves a legacy of amazing, innovative products, but also a different, better mindset instilled in the thousands of Apple employees that carry on that legacy, making great products for our enjoyment and consumption. I am confident that Apple and Pixar will keep their innovation machine running at full steam for years and years to come.
Apple has produced many breakthrough commercials, but none was more appropriate as a tribute to Steve’s legacy than the 1997 “Think Different” commercial (this is a never-before aired version, narrated by Steve Jobs himself):
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”Apple, Inc.
Rest in peace Steve Jobs.
